VINTAGE ARTWORK
The origin of geometric abstraction in Riveros’ work dates back to the mid-1960s with a sober palette of black and white, and in some cases adding blue, gray, or green. He uses a golden compass to establish the proportion in each work and divide the surface accurately. Its abstraction is characterized by the rigorous use of geometry – squares, rectangles and triangles – flat colors, and as a distinctive feature, by the use of the circle and the semicircle.
“And the light gray to the big ones! and the white, and the black, and the earth colors … and the tone … and the qualities: absolute, essential values, because without them there is no painting! and the form? Teach them what that is, you who are in the abstract. Teach them what the geometric plane is, and that art is finding that and not imitating. Teach them what the value of linear graphics is. And tell them that art will come back to that”.
